Choosing a carpet

Your choice of carpet not only depends on the design, whether it be plain, patterned, natural or textured, it is very important to remember that the suitability for the newly carpeted area is taken into consideration first. If you can approach a sales person with this information in mind, your search for the perfect carpet will be an easy one.

  1. Where in the home will it be laid
  2. Traffic (how many people in the home)
  3. Your personal expectation of the wear
  4. How vulnerable the carpet is to young children or pets.
  5. Budget

For example, if you are looking for hallway, stairs and landing carpet and you have a family of 4 with two teenage children and a dog…you will need a much more hardwearing carpet (Classified as Heavy Domestic) compared to that needed for a Spare bedroom (Light Domestic).

Your sales consultant will then be able to aid your selection of colour, design and texture, eliminating the unsuitable options and find you a carpet of excellent quality to your requirements.

We offer samples for you to take home so that you can decide on the perfect colour and texture in the comfort of your own home.

The floor is the starting point of every room. If you are completely redecorating, it is a good idea to choose the carpet first before the paint and fabrics. It is far easier to match paint to carpet than vice versa.

Carpet Construction

Pile

The pile is the area you stand on. Pile weaving processes can be varied to produce different levels of comfort and durability. ‘Pile weight’ refers to how much yarn is used throughout the manufacturing process.  The texture and weight of a pile can affect its appearance, wear and can also give it unique characteristics. For examples of the effects of different pile construction can have on the carpet, see the differences between Velvet and Twist Piles.

Wilton

The Wilton method is the oldest method of woven carpet tradition. The numbers of colours used in Wilton designs are limited and they are well known for their firmness and texture due to hidden colours woven deep into the body of the carpet.

Axminster

Axminster methods are classified in three sections; Spool, Gripper, or Spool Gripper. There are no hidden yarns under the backing on an Axminster carpet, as each tuft is a short length of yarn. The number of colours used in an Axminster carpet is not so limited, allowing for more intricate patterns, without compromising on quality and durability.

Tufted

An efficient manufacturing process that is much quicker than the traditional weaving methods, and allows for much more versatility on styles of carpets.

A tufted carpet can perform just as well as a woven carpet.

  Carpet textures

Carpet fibre/yarn can be manufactured from an increasing number of synthetic and natural materials and produced in a variety of textures and patterns. Hatfields' choice of specially selected quality carpets allow us to offer you an impressive range of pile densities, weaves and finishes, for all purposes and ready to be fitted into your home.

Velvet Pile

Twist Pile

Loop Pile

Smooth feel, with a shorter pile and a tighter, highly dense construction are the unique features of this product, giving the finished article a velvety appearance that is soft to walk on. The difference between the Twists and Velvets is purely aesthetic; there is no difference with regards to the performance of these carpets.

One of the most popular styles, it comes in wool and man made fibres containing high twist yarns, (the yarn has been given an extra turn or two) and this results in a rougher surface texture which is less prone to showing footmarks.

There are various loop forms available including small and tight, large, patterned and Heather, (which is a flecked yarn). It is a deeply textured style that adds an element of visual interest to contemporary homes. Advice should be taken by families with pets, as claws may catch the loops.

Shag Pile

Saxony Pile

Shag piles are designed for luxury and decorative use. In the main they come in heavy weights and are the ultimate in flooring splendour.

Shown: Covington Luxury

Consists of a shorter pile length than shag pile, but maintains the deep comfort feel. The Saxony pile is suitable for most rooms in the home, with some ranges recommending their Saxony products for use on stairs.

Carpet Design. The choices are endless…

Patterns

Patterned designs in carpet manufacture often draw influences from all over the world, including those of the Middle East, Turkish and Persian descent. William Morris and the Victorian Arts and Crafts movement in the late nineteenth century also inspired some of the most popular designs. However, for those who are not looking for traditional patterns will be equally enthused by the wide choice of modern design inspirations too.

With classic, bold patterns, to more subtle refreshing designs in luxurious colours there is something for every taste. The effect of choosing a patterned design can evoke warmth, spice, intrigue, and elegance to your room. Remember that pattern retention is important as you do not want your carpet to fade over time. Ask your sales consultant for advice.

Plains

From subtle shades to vivid hues, our selection of plain carpets are available in a massive showcase of contemporary colours. With such a huge number of options for wool rich carpets in a variety of pile weights, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to re-flooring your home. With all manner of textures and variations our expert sales consultants will offer you all the advice you need to achieve a more understated look.

Naturals

Wool, Sisal, Coir, Seagrass, Paper, Bamboo and Jute are some of the key ingredients of our natural carpets.  The designs are by no means limited by their 100% natural origins and are generally hard wearing, with incredible potential for unusual textures.

One of our key brands, Crucial Trading take pride in their range of beautiful natural flooring options that rely on the sensory pleasures that natural products can give our homes. For a truly unique design go au naturel.

100% Wool products are known for being a very luxurious and deeply tactile choice, chunky loops or tighter weaves are available in a huge colour palette and potential for superb contemporary and traditional designs.

Sisal is a very hard wearing product. The beauty of this resource is that it can be manipulated into effects such as the simple basket weave to intricate geometric design patterns.

The Jute range is one of the finest and softest of the natural fibres. Grown in Bangladesh the weaves of Jute carpets are simplistic but generate a look that is modest but comfortable.

Coir comes from the Coconut. It retains the rough tropical look of its natural state, and is a very durable and versatile product. The perfect choice for high traffic areas!

Stair Runners and Stairrods

For a visually stunning staircase, stair runners are a design to consider if you are looking for something different. Crafted using hardwearing dense fibres they will be able to cope with the high level of traffic this area of the home attracts.

A number of our brands have stair runner options and they are available in a majority of designs, colours and textures.

These can be complimented by a fine range of Stairrods. Today Stairrods are not a functional accompaniment to the stairs, they are purely aesthetic, however with a wide variety of finishes and ornamental finials they could add an air of elegance to an area that can be a dramatic, and elegant focal point in the home.

Inserts

The option of creating a border insert for your carpet can add charm to any carpet design. These can be carved in to your carpet, for a natural look, or inlaid for a more theatrical look. Hatfields offer both alternatives and the styles can be selected from our range in store.

Underlay

If you are looking to invest in a quality carpet, a good quality underlay is very important as it will prolong the life of the product. Use of an underlay will absorb the energy applied when walking on the carpet, and also acts as cushion to protect the carpet from damage resulting from the floor surface.
